Hardwood Flooring Options
BCAL Flooring Consultants are experts in hardwood flooring in Marietta GA. We want all of our customers to have a great understanding of the different options in hardwood—from installation to refinishing—so we can help find the perfect fit for your home.
When we talk about “hardwood” we are generally referring to one of two types. Solid hardwood flooring planks are 100% natural wood. Engineered hardwood planks are a combination of natural hardwood and a manufactured core. There are benefits to each, depending on what your goals are for your home.
Solid Hardwood
Solid hardwood floors are milled to a ¾” thick plank. Over time, they can be sanded and refinished several times, giving them great longevity. However, they are more expensive because they are solid wood. We have a wide array of prefinished solid hardwood flooring options, or you can elect to have the flooring installed unfinished, then finish it on site. Planks come in a variety of widths, from 2 ¼“ up to 11”.
We install solid hardwood floors by either nailing or stapling them to the subfloor. Because they are a natural material, they can shrink and expand to some extent. Because of this, we do not recommend installing solid hardwoods in areas with a lot of water, such as bathrooms.
Engineered Hardwood
Engineered hardwood planks have a much thinner layer of natural wood that is laminated to a core of manufactured plywood or fiberboard material. They look just as great as solid hardwood, and they cost less. However, because the hardwood layer is thin, we cannot sand and refinish engineered flooring the way we can with solid wood.
Flooring installation for engineered wood can be easier than with solid hardwood; options include nailing, gluing, and even snapping into place as a floating floor. They are more water-resistant since their core is not prone to expansion. They are a great option for many people, particularly if flooring cost is a driving factor.
Types of Hardwood
Not all varieties of wood are created equal. To be a true “hardwood” means the lumber is coming from a few species of trees. These include:
- Bamboo
- Hickory
- Maple
- Acacia
- Oak
- Walnut
- Mahogany
- Tigerwood
- Brazilian Cherry
Other softer woods like Western White Pine, Birch, Cherry, and American Walnut are much more prone to showing wear and tear over the years. We generally do not recommend these options to our customers unless they are specifically seeking a wood flooring option that will show imperfections with time.
Caring for your Hardwood Floors
Though hardwood is durable, you will still want to take proper care to maximize your investment. We always recommend using felt pads on the bottoms of furniture to avoid scratching the wood. It’s also a great time to institute a “no shoes” policy indoors, to reduce the amount of dust and dirt coming in, as well as to avoid any scratches from hard-soled shoes or high heels.
There are several cleaning products on the market that do a great job removing dust and dirt, and also protecting the finish on your floors. We can review our recommendations with you based on the type of flooring you choose.
