What is Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring?
Luxury vinyl plank, or LVP, is man-made of several key components, including PVC resins, pigmentation, fungicide, and stabilizers. The compound is mixed together and applied to a backing material with an adhesive. LVP is made the same way LVT (luxury vinyl tile) flooring is made. The only difference is the shape it is cut into once produced.
The top layer is what gives this flooring its overall look, in terms of both color and texture. LVP is popular as an alternative to the look of wood flooring, and it can be made to virtually any color, tone, and even plank width. As the name suggests, LVP flooring is cut into long, thin rectangles, or planks, similar to wood flooring. It is installed directly onto the concrete foundation or subfloor with an adhesive. It can also come in a click-together format, which does not require adhesive.
Benefits of Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring
The biggest benefits to luxury vinyl plank flooring for your home are its durability and price point. Its aesthetics are also popular with homeowners. LVP is designed to be waterproof, so it is a great option for bathrooms and other areas that are likely to be subjected to moisture. It is also strong enough to hold up in high-traffic areas. Because it comes in an array of colors and textures, it has something to offer just about any homeowner.
In terms of cost, LVP is one of the most affordable options on the market today. While slightly more expensive than carpet, LVP is generally less expensive than other waterproof choices like hardwood and tile.

Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring vs. Laminate Flooring
Laminate and vinyl plank flooring have a lot in common. Both are man-made, both are durable, and both are easy to install. However, laminate flooring is more solid than LVP because it is made primarily of wood byproducts that are pressed together into a final product. LVP has a softer feel and does a better job dampening sound. In contrast, laminate is less prone to being dented by sharp objects (though scratching can still be an issue). Cost-wise, there is very little difference between the two, but LVP is regarded as having a more realistic look and feel.
Cost of Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring vs. Carpet
As we mentioned above, carpet and LVP have very different uses, since LVP is solid and waterproof. In terms of cost, carpet can generally edge out LVP, but not by a big margin. And when factoring in carpet installation, the margins narrow even further. Finally, if you compare the average 10-year lifespan of carpet to the average 30-year lifespan of LVP, then LVP is the definitive winner on price. Ultimately, customers who are deciding between these two options need to decide if they want the softer carpet or the more solid LVP in their space. Much of the time, how you live in your spaces will help dictate which options are going to be best for you.
